“With global warming becoming such a serious political issue, reducing the carbon footprint of all packaging is essential. The industry is waking up to this fact but needs specialist design help,” says Peter Clarke, director of Chichester-based plastics packaging consultancy Yew Tree Consultants.
“With the ongoing development of materials, processes, machinery, robotics and mould design, any packaging that hasn’t been re-evaluated over the last 5 years can be improved upon,” Clarke says.
Weight reduction is the first step to reducing carbon footprint and the partners will be able to assist clients with down-weighting of existing pack designs. Ultimate savings, however, are typically achieved through the use of new materials and manufacturing processes. This requires a full re-design of the packaging system.
The core focus of the new alliance is to provide packaging users in the food and beverage, chemical, data storage and industrial markets with the specialist design resource they need to reduce the material content, energy input and manufacturing cost of their packaging.
The new partnership will also provide process equipment improvement consultancy services to packaging manufacturers looking to achieve cost reductions. This can extend to a full supplier audit with detailed and candid report on the level of technology used and effective upgrade routes.
